Latham, N.Y.-Based Fuel Cell Company Expects to Have Product by 2003.

Feb. 8--NEW YORK CITY--Fuel-cell maker Plug Power Inc. expects to have a device ready for the backup power market in 2003.
The Latham-based company's president and chief executive, Roger Saillant, said Plug will sell the 1- to 5-kilowatt fuel cells at a price between $1,500 and $3,000 a kilowatt. He was speaking Wednesday at a Salomon Smith Barney investor conference in Manhattan.
Until last year, Plug Power had expected its fuel cells would be used primarily in residences. But with fuel-cell costs likely to be too high for mass market until about 2005, the company broadened its horizons to target other customers who might be willing to pay more in the interim....
