Orange County, Fla., School Board Considers Selling Orlando Headquarters.

Feb. 13--Orange County School Board members want to sell their nine-story, glass-enclosed headquarters in downtown Orlando -- a move they say could save money as the district seeks voter approval for a sales tax increase.

Completed in 1990 for $20 million, the office tower has become a symbol of the haves and have-nots in a district where administrators enjoy executive suites while schoolchildren sit in mobile-home-style classrooms.

"We called it the Ivory Tower," said School Board member Kat Gordon at Tuesday's meeting, where Superintendent Ron Blocker made the surprise announcement.
