Crowds Thinner, Cheaper at NASCAR's Daytona 500.

Feb. 16--The cash registers have lost some of their cha-ching.

Employees at the Daytona 2000 store stayed busy Friday afternoon helping about a dozen customers maneuver their way through NASCAR merchandise. But it wasn't enough for owner Gilbert Myara.

"It's supposed to be a lot busier than what it is," he said.

He's not alone.

Toward the end of the week, some hotels were still hanging out vacancy signs -- unheard of during Speedweeks, locals say. Fans say the crowds look thinner too. There have been numerous reports that part of the Daytona International Speedway looked noticeably empty during Thursday's Twin 125.
