Opponent of Hewlett-Packard's Planned Merger Offers His Own Strategy for Firm.

Feb. 20--The leading opponent of Hewlett-Packard Co.'s planned merger with Compaq Computer Corp. released a plan of his own for H-P's future on Tuesday, responding to criticism that he couldn't come up with a better idea.

By focusing on its imaging and printing business and increasing profits from its personal computers, H-P wouldn't have to spend $22 billion on Houston-based Compaq, Walter Hewlett said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

His strategy "includes innovation, tactical acquisitions and blocking and tackling, rather than betting H-P's future on commodity computing and a protracted and risky integration," Mr. Hewlett said in a...
