Lobbyists Heed Call on Phone Bill; Florida Senate Panel Approves Rate Increase.

Feb. 21--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--Amid pressure from industry lobbyists, a Florida Senate committee gave a green light Wednesday to the largest local telephone rate increase in state history, which would boost charges an estimated $3 to $8 a month for customers of the state's three largest phone companies.
The bill orders a sharp increase in local phone rates but reduces fees charged between phone companies in hopes of sparking competition and driving down long-distance rates for customers. Backers, including industry giant BellSouth, say the combined effect will be to keep total phone bills about the same and could even save money for some. But opponents, including consumer...
