Lobbyists Heed Call on Phone Bill; Florida Senate Panel Approves Rate Increase.

Feb. 21--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--Amid pressure from industry lobbyists, a Florida Senate committee gave a green light Wednesday to the largest local telephone rate increase in state history, which would boost charges an estimated $3 to $8 a month for customers of the state's three largest phone companies.

The bill orders a sharp increase in local phone rates but reduces fees charged between phone companies in hopes of sparking competition and driving down long-distance rates for customers.
