Microsoft Wants Industrywide Standard for Reporting Software Security Problems.

Feb. 23--A computer programmer discovers a major security flaw in a program used by millions. Should he quietly notify the software company, without warning users of the vulnerable program? Or should he announce his discovery to the world, giving vandals an opportunity to exploit the flaw before it can be fixed?

It's a common conundrum for software companies such as Microsoft Corp. and for independent computer security specialists.

Microsoft on Thursday issued a repair patch for a software bug that was publicized on an Internet mailing list last year. But the company also issued patches for two other bugs that were unknown to the public.
