U.S. Agency Decides to Extend Aid to Former Laclede Steel Co. Workers.

Feb. 27--The U.S. Department of Labor's decision to extend worker-adjustment assistance to former Laclede Steel Co. workers could foretell good news for the steel industry, a local labor leader said Tuesday.

The Department of Labor decided Monday that Laclede Steel's former employees would qualify for the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, which provides extended unemployment benefits for workers whose companies have been adversely affected by increased imports. The benefits, which extend up to a year past the normal 26-week unemployment period, apply to people who are training for new jobs.
