Feb. 28--Paying taxes may be as painful as ever, but simpler ways to get the job done can ease the burden. A growing number of taxpayers prepare their returns online so they don't have to purchase or download software and they can use any computer with access to the Internet.
Intuit Inc., the leading provider of financial software and related Web-based services for consumers, reported in early February that its service, Quicken TurboTax for the Web, had handled 1 million federal income tax returns, reaching the milestone two weeks earlier than in 2001. Last year, 5.2 million people used Intuit's desktop software and 2.4 million selected its newer Web service.
