Big River Zinc to Shut Refinery During Summer in Sauget, Ill., for Renovations.

Mar. 8--SAUGET, Ill.--Big River Zinc Corp. will close its zinc refinery for three months this summer for repairs and labor-saving modifications that will result in the elimination of about 15-20 positions.
During the shut down of the electrolytic refinery, from June to September, about two thirds of the company's 320 employees will be temporarily laid off, mostly in operations, with a some layoffs in maintenance and the business side as well. The laid off employees will be eligible for unemployment.
The company plans to lay off about 40 more employees by the end of 2003 in order to reduce labor costs.
