Norfolk, Va.-Based Spirit Cruises Makes Adjustments after Sept. 11.

Mar. 13--Six months ago Thursday, the Spirit of New York tied up in a marina at Manhattan's Battery Park to become a floating relief center for rescue workers at the World Trade Center.

Four days earlier, on Sept. 11, the Spirit of New York and the Spirit of New Jersey had been pressed into service. The ships ferried 8,500 people fleeing the island and the destruction of the World Trade Center to New Jersey.

After it docked at North Cove Marina, the Spirit of New York gave rescue workers meals and a place to rest for about three weeks.
