Regulators Likely to Reject Plan for Second Area Code for Eastern Washington.

Mar. 13--Washington regulators meeting today are expected to spike a 2-year-old plan to impose a second area code in Eastern Washington.

If the Utilities and Transportation Commission accepts the recommendation of its staff, 509 will remain indefinitely the only area code for the area east of the Cascade Mountains, said Assistant Director Glenn Blackmon. The decision would also make Washington the first state to turn back a proposal for a new area code, he said.

"Eastern Washington doesn't need a new area code," Blackmon said.
