IRS Notes Increase in Tax Filings Compared to Year Earlier.

Mar. 15--Taxpayers are getting a faster jump on their income taxes this year, partly because more are going online.

That's the message from two tallies released Thursday as the tax filing season edges closer to the April 15 deadline.

The Internal Revenue Service reported that Americans had filed 53.8 million tax returns through March 8, or about 3 percent more than at the same time a year ago.

About 5.4 million of those taxpayers, or 39 percent more than last year, filed from home computers. An additional 22 million, or 10 percent more than last year, hired tax professionals to file their returns electronically.
