Florida Senate President Offers New Take on Tax System.

Mar. 14--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--Senate President John McKay dropped his bid Wednesday for an overhaul of Florida's tax system, instead shopping around a more modest plan that still faces a tough sell as the Legislature lurches toward next week's scheduled adjournment.

McKay has been under pressure for weeks from Gov. Jeb Bush, House Speaker Tom Feeney, R-Oviedo, and powerful business lobbyists to abandon the most ambitious tax restructuring in a half-century.

Keeping icy cool, he has insisted his tax crusade would succeed. But that appeared unlikely as one of his top lieutenants offered a compromise McKay indicates he will accept.
