Hewlett-Packard Believes It Has Votes for Merger with Compaq.

Mar. 20--Hewlett-Packard Co. said Tuesday that it believes it has enough shareholder votes to approve its $21 billion acquisition of Houston's Compaq Computer Corp. But the leader of the opposition to the merger said the election results are too close to call.
On Wednesday, Compaq's shareholders are expected to overwhelmingly approve the merger in a 2 p.m. meeting at Houston's Wyndham Greenspoint Hotel.
But H-P's votes, the last of which were cast in a shareholder meeting Tuesday, could take weeks or even months to count and certify. That leaves shareholders and employees of Compaq and H-P, based in Palo Alto, Calif., waiting breathlessly for the conclusion of a...
