Florida Senate Approves Large Increase in Local Telephone Rates.

Mar. 22--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--After months of heavy pressure from phone-industry lobbyists, the Florida Senate on Thursday approved and sent to the governor a bill that could spark the largest local telephone-rate increase in state history.
Customers of the state's three-largest phone companies could see rates for basic service rise $3 to $8 per month in the next few years, consumer advocates estimate.
Opponents of the bill, including consumer groups, Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth and AARP of Florida, say the sharp increase in local phone rates will hurt elderly and poor phone customers.
