Mining Company Makes Deal with Reno, Nev., Utility to Opt Out of Power System.

Mar. 22--Barrrick Goldstrike Mines, the first large power user to seek permission to exit the regulated power utility system under a state law adopted last year, has negotiated an agreement with Sierra Pacific Power Co. to leave the Reno-based utility.
The staff of the Public Utilities Commission also signed the agreement, but state Consumer Advocate Tim Hay's office opposes it. The three-member commission is scheduled to vote on the agreement on March 29.
The commission decision will be the first indication of how the PUC views these proposals anywhere in the state.
