Mar. 27--TREATED-WOOD WARNINGS WERE WORTH HEEDING: These warnings from government and manufacturers show it's not safe to touch, breathe or ingest this stuff.

Yet last year, when officials closed playgrounds to guard youngsters from arsenic-tainted wood, they were criticized for overreacting.

The officials were right. Their actions were justified. Even the Environmental Protection Agency finally agreed this wood is risky.

No longer able to ignore the evidence, the EPA is phasing arsenic-treated wood out of residential use in December of next year.
