Monsanto Hopes to Consolidate Dioxin in Putnam County, W.Va., Landfill.

Mar. 29--Monsanto Co. wants to consolidate dioxin buried in a Putnam County landfill and recap the dump, according to a company study released Thursday.

The proposal would cost about $1.3 million, says the study prepared by a Monsanto contractor.

In the report, Monsanto contractor Arcadis said that it would be cheaper to remove dioxin "hot spots" within the dump. That would cost about $600,000.

But, the report said, that could change if federal regulators tighten rules for how much dioxin is dangerous to humans and the environment.
