Apr. 2--In February, Robert Ira Ballon of Escondido, a stock broker who worked out of his home, was terminated by Dayton, Ohio-based Tower Equities, according to the firm.
Tower says it fired the broker after doing an internal investigation of allegations by a San Diego lawyer that Ballon had embezzled $75,000 from a San Diego widow in her 70s. That account is buttressed by a San Diego broker with a major firm who carefully checked out her brokerage records.
Ballon admitted stealing the funds, says the widow, Jerry Unitt, and her attorney, Douglas Jaffe. "Ballon promised her he would pay her back over several years, but after I called him Friday and he refused to...
