Apr. 8--Garbage collection in Bangkok reeks of corruption, according to officials who are probing the mysterious disappearance of millions of baht in rubbish collection fees.
Last year, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration collected 104 million baht in garbage service fees from 700,000 households, up from 73 million baht in 2000.
However, Bangkok has more than 1.9 million houses -- posing the question of who pocketed fees supposedly collected by garbage services from the majority of households.
Officials believe that most households paid for the service but only about 10 percent of the money due actually reached the authority. The charges set by the BMA start at four...
