Criminal Settlement in Arthur Andersen Case Tied to Civil Lawsuits.

Apr. 17--WASHINGTON--Negotiations between embattled accounting firm Arthur Andersen and federal prosecutors have become entangled with the fate of a large civil suit that Andersen officials fear could devastate the partnership.
Andersen and Justice Department officials have neared agreement on a deal that calls for the federal government to defer prosecuting the one-time Enron Corp. auditor on an obstruction of justice charge, in exchange for an admission the firm was aware employees were illegally destroying documents needed for the investigation.
One source close to the talks remained optimistic a criminal agreement could be announced within days, thereby heading off a trial now...
