Penn State University Sports Programs Hinge on Success of Football.

Apr. 20--UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--Every time the Penn State football team takes to the field at Beaver Stadium, more rides on the game than the score.

Like those at many other Division I schools, Penn State's varsity athletics program counts on football to bring in the revenues that support women's soccer, men's lacrosse and just about every other sport, with the exception of men's basketball.

Gridiron and hardwood revenues, with private giving, have allowed Penn State's athletics program to stay self-supporting, one of maybe three dozen college programs doing so in the country -- although no firm figure exists.
