Norfolk, Va., International Airport Reports 17 Percent Increase in Traffic.

Apr. 24--Airline traffic continues to soar at Norfolk International Airport, bucking national trends.

Business climbed 17 percent in March, and nearly 13 percent for the first quarter of 2002.

Before the arrival of low-fare leader Southwest Airlines in October, typical growth was around 3 percent.

"It's the so-called Southwest effect and its ripple effect to other carriers who are offering some pretty good fares, too," said Kenneth R. Scott, the airport's executive director. "I think the region is responding to that."

When Southwest enters a market, studies show, passenger tallies rise and fares fall.
