Florida Growers Hope for Sweet Success from New Strawberry Variety.

Apr. 28--PLANT CITY, Fla.--She's devilishly deep red, quite shapely and sweet, and oh, so shippable.

And she comes through when most others won't -- in December.

If all goes as planned, "Carmine," also known as FL 95-256, will be the new queen of the early winter strawberry market.

Carmine (pronounced KAR-men, a word for deep red or crimson) is the newest variety of strawberry released by the University of Florida's research lab in Dover, west of Plant City.

This berry is expected to replace the locally popular Sweet Charlie, which tastes great but has such a short shelf life that it cannot be shipped.
