Best Buy Stops Using Wireless Cash Registers Amid Concerns about Data Thieves.

May 3--Best Buy Co. said it has stopped using wireless cash registers following a news report that computer hackers can sit in parking lots to "listen in" on data that some retailers beam from those machines to central computers in their stores.

The retailer took action Wednesday after an anonymous user claimed on an e-mail list to have taken a credit card number from Best Buy's system. MSNBC.com reported that several big retailers have installed wireless cash registers and transmit data without encrypting it, which makes it possible to read.
