May 2--MeadWestvaco's Forestry Division laid off 18 employees at its Summerville headquarters Wednesday, while specialty chemical maker Rhodia cut 26 jobs, six of them vacant positions, at its King Street plant.
MeadWestvaco officials said further cuts were likely. A Rhodia spokesman said the company was hopeful but not confident that there wouldn't be any more.
MeadWestvaco's cuts were part of a corporate restructuring announced in February.
The Summerville employees were in forest research, maintenance, human resources and communications areas, according to Casey Canonge, vice president of communications for the division.
