California Supreme Court Upholds Sacramento Firm's Firing of Proselytizer.

May 17--In a duel over religious freedom, the California Supreme Court came down on the side of a Sacramento medical provider Thursday, ruling that the Catholic organization had the right to fire an evangelical Christian who proselytized at the workplace.

The decision spawned dueling reactions, with one constitutional law expert hailing it as victory for the separation of church and state -- and another decrying it as a blow to individual rights.

The case stems from the dismissal nearly 10 years ago of medical records clerk Terence Silo. Silo contended that his firing violated state and federal rules that prohibit religious discrimination in employment....
