Grocery Stores May Fall to Price Wars in Fort Wayne, Ind., Official Warns.

May 20--FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Fort Wayne's grocery-price war gives shoppers big savings at the checkout. But grocery industry officials warn the intense competition could end up costing the community one of its major grocery chains.

"You are grossly over-stored," said Joe Lackey, president of the Indiana Grocery and Convenience Store Association. "You have got way too much square footage."

Most newer grocery stores in the Fort Wayne area are larger than the national average of 40,000 square feet. Many here fall in the 60,000 square-foot range.
