London-Based Retailer Mothercare Reports Product Availability Improving.

May 24--Mothercare insists its stock problems have delayed but not derailed its recovery and it plans to "motor ahead" with store revamps.

Before Christmas, shoppers were furious that only 55 out of 100 products were in stock ? but availability is now back to 90 percent. "We want to get up to 95 percent on core lines," said boss Chris Martin.

Since he joined two years ago, staff training has trebled and the stores are offering specialist advice and clinics. But Martin warns there is no quick fix and reckons the business will not be back on track until mid-2004.

"Mothercare has suffered from massive underinvestment and we are fixing the fundamentals," he said.
