North Carolina's Public Companies Show No Particular Identity, Trend.

May 27--California's Silicon Valley has Intel and Cisco. Seattle has Microsoft. New York has Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.

And North Carolina has Air T, Blue Rhino, Cree, Family Dollar, Fountain Powerboat Industries, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Guilford Mills and Speedway Motorsports.

Unlike many other regions of the country, North Carolina -- RTP's efforts and Krispy Kreme marketing aside -- has not yet forged an identity based on a specific company or industry.

Indeed, the public companies that make up the first N&O 100 list are all over the map -- figuratively and literally. They span from the Wilkesboro headquarters of Lowe's, the state's No. 1...
