Bush Administration Reports on Political Influence of Enron Officials.

May 29--Former Enron Chairman Kenneth Lay recommended to the Bush administration last year that then-Tennessee Valley Authority director Glenn McCullough be promoted to chairman of the government utility, the White House confirmed Tuesday.

A month after Mr. Lay wrote to the White House endorsing Mr. McCullough, President Bush tapped the former Tupelo, Miss., mayor for the top job at TVA.

But White House and Congressional officials said Tuesday that Mr. McCullough's selection was due primarily to the backing of Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott, a fellow Mississippi Republican, and not the endorsement of those outside of Washington.
