Salina, Kan., Red Cross Cuts Back on Employees as Money Dries Up.

Jun. 1--The North Central Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross in Salina has laid off an employee, cut back others' hours and might reduce services because of a shortage of money.

Most of agency's three full and six part-time employees have voluntarily accepted a cut in pay.

Nationwide, more than 1,000 Red Cross chapters are short of money, and some have even closed their doors, said Vicktoria Degand, executive director of the Salina Red Cross chapter, 145 S. Santa Fe.

"We have spent down our reserves to where there is nothing left in case of emergencies. If the trend continues, we'll have to cut services. We do not plan on going away."
