Jun. 11--Michael Williams works in a building that has a history of changing lives.

Williams is a private family therapist and director of nonprofit foster-care agency The Family Center.

The center is located on the second floor of the stone-walled Brisco Hotel, built in 1904. It is reached by a steep, 30-step, red-carpeted staircase.

Today, the building is owned by Howard Mankins, a local preservationist and former county supervisor and Arroyo Grande mayor.
