Britain's Newcastle Building Society Rethinks Brick-and-Mortar Branches.

Jun. 16--A massive decline in the number of building society branches on Britain's High Streets is predicted by one of the industry's leading players.

Robert Hollinshead, chief executive of Newcastle building society, believes that dozens of branches could disappear in the next two years because of changes in the way people control their finances.

Hollinshead says many branches will become redundant as younger people increasingly use the phone or the internet for basic transactions.

He believes that unless the building societies take a radical look at how they run their businesses, the momentum for branch closures will become irresistible....
