British Airways Takes the Gloves Off in Low-Cost Airline Price War.

Jun. 19--Buyers climbed aboard British Airways, pushing Europe's biggest carrier 4 3/4 pence higher to 201 1/4 pence. BA put the cat among the pigeons in the low-cost airline price war by slashing fares by as much as 80 percent on almost a third of its European routes from tomorrow. The cuts cover all destinations in France, Italy and Portugal.

Prices will start from UKpound 59 return on domestic routes, or UKpound 69 return including taxes, from London to Paris and Amsterdam. BA will make it much easier to book through its website by cutting out agents" commissions.

Broker WestLB Panmure applauded the move. Analyst John Lawson believes BA is several steps ahead...
