After Apprenticeship, Suffolk, Va., Garden Shop Employee Promoted to Co-Owner.

Jun. 25--SUFFOLK, Va.--Tom and Laura Conway bought Smithfield Gardens in 2000, but it wasn't until the past two weeks that they really took over.

Even though Tom had been working with Smithfield Gardens since 1988, when it was just a part-time high school job, and full time since 1993, he knew he could learn things about ownership that being an employee hadn't taught him. So he agreed to a self-imposed apprenticeship.
