Learning Became a Lifelong Passion for Former Steelworker in Indiana.

Jun. 27--John Madrigal went straight from high school to the steel mill 37 years ago, but after getting a taste of college courses he couldn't stay away from a classroom.

Now a career guidance counselor at Ivy Tech State College in East Chicago, Madrigal graduated in 1987 from Purdue University Calumet with a master's degree in education.

"The more I learned, the more doors kept opening for me," Madrigal said.

College hadn't been an option for Madrigal and most of his friends in the small Kansas farming community where he grew up, graduating from high school in 1955.
