Jun. 29--Hot young chefs in every restaurant. Thousands of college students living, working and playing downtown. A thriving dining and entertainment scene.

These are among the benefits Charlotte can expect from the downtown campus Johnson & Wales University will occupy in 2004.

But while the arrival of the school, famous for producing top chefs and hoteliers, is expected to mark a giant step for downtown revitalization, it is more of a baby step for the city's $2.6billion convention and tourism industry.

Meeting planners note that better food alone is not enough to propel Charlotte from its relative obscurity as a second-tier convention...
