Jun. 29--ASHBURN, Va.--The inside of Felix Kong's car said it all: two cardboard boxes on the front seat and a miniature ficus tree on the floor.
"It's sad. I kind of knew it was going to happen," said Kong, one of 500 employees fired yesterday from troubled telecommunications giant WorldCom Inc.'s Ashburn campus in Loudoun County.
In all, the company axed about 1,300 employees in Virginia, or about 17 percent of WorldCom's statewide work force. The Virginia firings were part of a companywide 17,000-employee layoff that came three days after revelations the company had improperly accounted for $3.8 billion in expenses.
