El Al Airlines Takes Multifaceted Approach to Airport Security.

Jul. 5--When Congress was drafting legislation to shore up aviation security last year after the terrorist attacks, experts at El Al Airlines who were asked for advice said it wouldn't be nearly enough to tighten procedures at the passenger checkpoints and aircraft gates.

Airport security, the Israelis insisted, must extend to the ticket counters.

El Al, which set the gold standard for airline security and has repeatedly foiled terrorist attacks and attempted hijackings, operates under the philosophy that it is under attack every day.

The strategy appeared to pay off Thursday, when a gunman opened fire at an El Al ticket counter at Los Angeles...
