AT&T Corp. to Offer Local Telephone Service in New Jersey.

Jul. 16--NEWARK, N.J.--AT&T Corp., the nation's largest long-distance company, will begin to offer local telephone service in New Jersey by the end of the summer, a top executive said yesterday.

A week ago, Verizon Communications, the No. 1 local telephone company in the state, began to pitch long-distance plans to residents after it won approval from the Federal Communications Commission to offer long-distance service.

For years, AT&T has said it was too expensive for the company to provide local telephone service in New Jersey, where residential basic rates are low. But yesterday,the state Board of Public Utilities ordered Verizon to lower key wholesale rates...
