Seattle Officials Eye Garbage Rates Tied to Weight.

Jul. 21--Seattle Public Utility officials say they hope to start charging for residential garbage pickup by weight instead of volume as in the present system.
But don't look for scale-equipped trucks anytime soon.
"Where we hope to go is to charge by the pound, and weigh everyone's garbage," said the utility's Ed Steyh, who oversees existing contracts with the two companies that collect garbage, yard waste and recycling items.
Steyh's comments came in response to strong reader reaction to a Thursday article in The Times about the city's crackdown on "extra garbage" -- charging customers an additional $5.50 per overstuffed can, extra bag or garbage-bin lid...
