Pennsylvania Townships Take on FCC over Cable Internet Rule.

Jul. 29--Local officials say a March ruling by the Federal Communications Commission has the force of law and allows cable television companies to increase monthly Internet rates while the quality of their service suffers.

On March 17, the FCC classified cable Internet service as an "information service." Information services, unlike cable television, don't require franchise contracts with local governments. And it is through those contracts that consumer protections are provided.

Lancaster County townships are leading the state's fight against the new federal rule that allows cable television monopolies to use municipal property without permission or compensation.
