Aug. 8--A late buying spree pushed major stock indexes to their second straight winning session in volatile trading on Wednesday. Stocks closed up an upswing, encouraging for investors.
But analysts were hard-pressed to explain the rally, except for a better-than-expected profit report from bellwether Cisco Systems (CSCO).
The market showed little reaction to a speech by President Bush in which he said the nation had been let down by "shady" companies. He spoke in Jackson, Miss., close to the home of beleaguered WorldCom, a telecom company now in bankruptcy court and a company on every list of corporate misbehavior.
