Pentagon Purchasing Chief Skeptical about Bell Helicopter Textron's Osprey.

Aug. 9--WASHINGTON - The V-22 Osprey has about a year to prove itself in flight tests, Pentagon procurement chief Pete Aldridge said Thursday, adding that he is "skeptical" the aircraft will pass muster.

"I'm probably the most skeptical person in the Department of Defense at this time on the V-22," Mr. Aldridge said at a breakfast with reporters. "I've got some real problems with the airplane."

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld also could decide to cancel the $40 billion program because of its cost, Mr. Aldridge said. But, he said, the plan is to let flight testing decide the Osprey's fate.
