American Airlines Plans to Cut Jobs, Fine-tune Scheduling, Streamline Fleet.

Aug. 14--For the third time since airline deregulation, American Airlines is making a big change in its strategy.
Its "growth plan," launched in 1983, tried to lower costs by adding hundreds of airplanes and tens of thousands of employees.
The 1993 "transition plan," which reshaped its route system as it closed three U.S. hubs, focused on getting more high-fare business travelers and avoiding low-cost competitors. Although it tried to cut overhead, its bigger goal was to increase revenue.
But Tuesday, with fares low and losses high throughout the airline industry, American unveiled a new strategy that again focuses on costs and simplifying operations....
