Cracks Halt High-Speed Amtrak Acela Trains on Tuesday.

Aug. 14--Amtrak's high-speed Acela Express service was suspended Tuesday when cracks were found in a critical part that stabilizes the locomotives as they travel at 150 mph from Boston to New York and Washington, D.C.

All 18 trains were pulled from the tracks. Inspectors found cracks in the shock absorber assemblies of eight of the first 10 trains inspected, said spokeswoman Karina VanVeen.

Inspectors are expected to examine the remaining eight trains by the end of the week, VanVeen said.

Although no accidents were known to have resulted from the cracks, the situation was dangerous, VanVeen said.

"We feel it's not safe," she said....
