Figures Show Airlines Charge Less for Seats Today Than 20 Years Ago.

Aug. 22--Airlines are charging less than half the price for a seat today than they did 20 years ago, a look at inflation-adjusted figures reveals.

"We're getting a pretty good deal today, but I'm never going to admit that as a consumer," said Randy Petersen, publisher of Inside Flyer, a travel consumer magazine.

The airlines wish somebody would. The industry expects to post losses of around $4 billion this year, a result of declining traffic following terrorist attacks on Sept. 11.

In 2001, the airlines reported losses of more than $7 billion -- even with a government bailout totalling more than $4 billion.
