Many New Jersey Farmers Suffer through Long, Hot Summer.

Aug. 25--The blueberries are shriveled. The corn stalks are droopy. The soybeans are brittle.

The dry, hot weather is hurting many Garden State farmers.

But Tom Amabile is giddy as he walks through his central Jersey vineyard.

"It's going to be a phenomenal vintage year," says Amabile, the owner of Cream Ridge Winery, as he plucks a "Super Concord" grape the color of a midnight sky. "It's heavenly," Amabile says, popping it into his mouth.

Unlike most crops, grapes love dry weather. Too much rain can cause a grape's skin to split and ferment on the vine. Moisture invites mildew and black rot. Without rain, insecticides don't get washed...
