Kentucky Utilities Blames Former AEI Chief for Its Purchase of Polish Coal.

Sep. 5--FRANKFORT, Ky.--As waves of sweltering heat swept through the state last summer, a barge carrying contents that would chill the soul of most any Appalachian man slowly eased up against the unloading dock of an Ohio River power plant.

Polish coal would soon help keep the lights on in Lexington.

The summer and fall of 2001 was apparently the first time foreign-mined coal was burned to supply electricity to Kentucky, a state where the mining industry still employs 17,000 people, where even the governor is a former coal mine operator.
